2009 Australian State Team Age Short Course Championships

The Australian State Team Age Short Course Championships will be conducted in Canberra at the Australian Institute of Sport from the 19th to 21st September 2009. This is the first year this competition has been conducted and the concept will be reviewed. All states are participating in this event. Some states are sending teams of up to 40 competitors. ASAOC will be sending a team of 20 competitors plus 4 support staff. The competition is structured so that team size will not impact on the ability to score points. The purpose of the event is to provide a short course racing opportunity for age competitors in a highly competitive environment. Swimming Australia's National Youth Coach Leigh Nugent is leading the concept and will be a keen observer of the progress of athletes.

Selection for this event will be based on performance at the ASAOC State Age short course championships. Members who are not current Development squad members may not only qualify to participate in the meet, but they will also have the opportunity to then become a member of one of our performance squads.

Selection is based on FINA point score. This is the fairest means of selecting our team and is a means of ensuring the most competitive swimmers will attend the meet. There is pressure to perform and incentive if you do perform well. ASAOC will be taking the WAIS Swimming Performance Manager and a staff manager to act as team manager. Two other positions will be filled by coaches based on the success of swimmers selected onto the team. Please find attached a copy of the ASAOC Athlete and Coach Selection Criteria.

If you are interested in attending the 2009 Australian State Team Age Short Course Championships as a coach or athlete you need to complete the attached "Registration of intent to swim / coach form." This form needs to be returned to ASAOC by Monday 17th August, this form indicates that if you are successful in being selected for the WA team you will be available to attend the meet. Should swimmers or coaches not submit the form it will be presumed that they are unavailable to attend the swim meet. All swimmers and coaches are strongly encouraged to register their intent to attend the meet.

As this is the first year of the event ASAOC will review its selection process for next year at the conclusion of the 2009 meet.
