Alf Matthews Nominated for Beijing Olympics Ref Posting

WA swimming icon Alf Matthews has been nominated as a Referee for the 2008 Beijing Olympics. The only Australian FINA Swimming Referee nominated Alf is almost certain to be packing his suitcase and boarding a plane headed straight for Beijing.

The Olympics among many are considered the largest and most prestigious sporting meet around the world so being presented this opportunity to work at an Olympic Games can only be described as a great achievement and a fantastic opportunity for the modest Wongan Hills Referee.

Twenty two years ago Alf never dreamed he would be refereeing at an Olympic Games, quite excited about the opportunity Matthews says "It's quite nice to be recognized for my efforts and be rewarded with this great opportunity".

The only Australian FINA swimming referee nominated for the Beijing Olympics Alf says he is really looking forward to the opportunity. "I will probably be working in the area of inspecting returns. I held that position at the Commonwealth Games and it was fantastic, it was really enjoyable, there was a great atmosphere and it's great to be able to watch top swimmers from all around world compete".

A life member of the Wongan Hills swimming club since 1987 Alf has put a lot of time into both the Wongan Hills swimming club and the wider Country swimming community.

The only Western Australian Country Referee to ever officiate at State, National and International level Matthews takes his achievements in his stride and looks back with delight at the many events he has officiated and the fantastic swimming he has witnessed poolside whilst refereeing.

Technical Committee Coordinator Lesley Arrowsmith says "Alf is a wonderful mentor and representative for ASAOC, he is a very gentle, steady and calm referee, he's not over the top, he's very fair, true to the rules and he always does the right thing, he deserves this great opportunity".

ASAOC would like to congratulate Alf on his nomination and thank him for his efforts and assistance towards the swimming community throughout the past twenty two years.
